The bridge on the A422 near Farthinghoe is set to reopen at midnight tomorrow (Thursday, December 20) after five months of closure. Work began exactly one month ago to repair the bridge over Farthinghoe Stream after being found to be in a dangerous state in August.

The Helmdon Cafe / Lunch Club Christmas Raffle, organised by the Thorpe family, was a great success, raising a record sum of £268; the proceeds will be divided between two cancer related charities, namely Marie Curie and Macmillan Nurses. It seems a long time since the amazing Helmdon Summer Ball, but we now get the privilege of donating the proceeds. So this is a message to village and community groups who want to put in a bid for some of the money. Helmdon Stitchers have excelled themselves with this Christmas knit, for Katharine House Hospice. Almost 200 of these chocolate filled novelties will go on sale from a number of KH outlets, to raise much needed funds for this worthy cause. Well done ladies.

For some years now, in addition to remembering the men of Helmdon that died during the two World Wars, Helmdon has also remembered the US Army Air Corps men that died when their B-17 bomber, the "Sharon Belle", crashed with the loss of all ten crew near Astwell Castle Farm on 30th November 1943; the pilot of that fated aircraft was Capt. Richard W Pugh.

On the 11th November, 100 years since Armistice, bells will ring out in unison from churches, cathedrals, in villages, towns and cities across the country.
To mark the centenary of the first world war, a campaign called "Ringing Remembers" was initiated to recruit 1400 new bell ringers across the UK in honour of the 1400 bell ringers who lost their lives during WW1.
