South Northants Council To Go In 2020

At a meeting of South Northants Council (SNC) held on 31 August 2018, councillors voted in favour of abolishing their own council, along with the county council and all the other district and borough councils in the county.

Council services will be provided in the future by two new "unitary" councils, one covering West Northamptonshire and the other covering North Northamptonshire. Helmdon will come under West Northamptonshire Council and be part of an area that extends from Aynho to Market Harborough and from Daventry to Cogenhoe.

Speaking at the meeting (read full speech here), SNC Leader, Cllr Ian McCord, said "The choice facing us now is both stark and clear cut. We either vote to go along with the almost inevitable conclusion of two new unitaries, in so doing stand a good chance of positively influencing the future services our residents receive, or else, we vote to shout angrily at the tide demanding that it stops coming in".

The proposal, which was also agreed by all the other councils except Corby, has now been submitted for consideration by the Government and a response is expected in the Autumn.
