Helmdon Hurler - No Longer Running

From Helmdon Villagers Facebook page - Posted May 2022

It is sad to say that the era of the "Hurler" is over.

The last event was its usual success back in 2019 but Covid intervened and it is considered unviable and too expensive in costs and time to re-launch so we must call it a day.

I would like to thank all our helpers and Runners for their wonderful support over the 11 years that it operated.

Surplus funds are being distributed around various village groups as follows:
£250 each for the 6 below = £1500

  • Acorns
  • Reading Room
  • Footpaths Committee
  • Friends of the Church
  • Sports Club
  • Helmdon Players

Balance to the Girl Guiding Units of £497

Helmdon Hurler - Introduction

The Helmdon Hurler is a gruelling (for some!) 4.3 miles (6.92 km) running event in Helmdon, Northamptonshire.

The inaugural Hurler was held on 30 August 2010 and has become an August Bank Holiday tradition in Helmdon.

The route combines the country lanes of Helmdon with the hard-surfaced "Astwell track". The route is gently undulating but not too difficult, even for beginner runners.

The Helmdon Hurler is a fun run for everyone - young and old, males and females, fit and not so fit. Treat it as a time trial, or amble around at your own pace. The event raises money for local groups and organisations.

The Helmdon Hurler - 2020

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Helmdon Hurler committee have been advised by England Athletics (event insurer) to seriously consider running this year's event. In such a dynamic and changing situation the committee have held this final decision until the last minute.

Unfortunately, even with strict social distancing rules, the risks associated to over 120 runners (young and old) is too great. Sporting events are important, however the health and wellbeing of the Hurler participants takes ultimate precedence.

It is with deep regret that this year's event is cancelled.

We hope that you have used this time to keep fit and that we will see you in August 2021
